My name is Mao Lee and I am a Patient and Community Outreach Volunteer for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I believe in the importance of educating and spreading the word about cancer and the resources that are available.
My mother had cancer and I wish that I had more knowledge during her cancer diagnosis and journey. The truth is, many go through cancer or have a loved one who go through cancer feeling lost. I know that's how I felt, and I would like to play a role in helping others navigate during such a difficult time. I was looking to make a positive impact and was able to link with LLS in Fresno. I learned about what they do to help cancer patients and knew that I had to be a part of making a difference within their organization.
I've been volunteering with LLS for three years. I go into cancer facilities and departments to conduct in-services where I present information to the medical staff regarding LLS services for patients, caregivers of patients, and medical providers.
I also assist in other areas where needed, whether it be with events, making phone calls, or tabling at cancer conferences. I enjoy knowing that with my efforts, a positive difference is being made. I work full time as a Director of Business Development for a medical company but I do what I can to volunteer. I encourage anyone who can spare some time to get involved.
Because of LLS, you are not alone and cancer doesn't have to be as scary.
