Staying Connected: Facilitating the Learning Experience During & After Cancer Treatment

Target Audience

School nurses, social workers, teachers, school counselors and other school and college personnel. Parents are welcome.

Goal

To educate school and college personnel on the effects of childhood, adolescent and young adult cancer treatment to improve the learning experience during and after cancer treatment.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

Identify cancers that affect children, adolescents, and young adults (AYAs)
Identify side effects, long-term and late effects of childhood/AYA cancer treatment
Describe challenges for survivors throughout their education
Explain laws that protect childhood/AYA cancer survivors’ rights
Develop strategies to help meet the students’ short- and long-term education needs
Discuss how to prepare the student body and faculty when a student is undergoing cancer treatment
Explain how to prepare students and faculty for the impending death of a student
List strategies to support healing for students and faculty prior to and after the death of a student
Access resources that support schools and families, including those from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Introduction to Staying Connected: Facilitating the Learning Experience During and After Cancer Treatment
Treatment and Side Effects of Childhood, Adolescent, and Young Adult (AYA) Cancers
Cancers diagnosed in children, adolescents, and young adults (AYA), and common symptoms, treatment options, and side effects of treatment.
Psychosocial Concerns of a Cancer Diagnosis in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults (AYA )
Psychosocial impact of a cancer diagnosis on the patient, their family and peers, and age appropriate information and strategies to help the student and their peers.
The Education Journey During and After Cancer Treatment: Approaches to Dealing with These Challenges
Challenges survivors face throughout their education journey, strategies to help meet the students’ short- and long-term education needs, and laws that protect pediatric cancer survivors’ education rights.
Coping with Grief, Loss, and Bereavement throughout the Treatment Continuum
Impact of grief and loss and strategies to help school personnel, peers, and families cope with their grief

Continuing Education Information

Staying Connected Modules 1 – 4: Medical, Psychosocial, Education

Registered Nursing Credit Designation
Approval for nurses has been obtained by the National Office of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society under Provider Number CEP 5832 to award 5.5 continuing education contact hours through the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Social Work Credit Designation
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) Provider Number 1105, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. LLS maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 12/10/2020-12/10/2023. Social workers completing this course receive 5.5 clinical continuing education credits.
LLS is recognized by the New York State Education Departments State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW- 0117. LLS maintains responsibility for the program. Social workers will receive 5.5 clinical CE contact hours for this activity.
Education
Teachers, school counselors, and other school and college personnel will receive a Certificate of Completion to submit to their local professional development approval committee. Prior approval for acceptance of this training may be required.

Staying Connected Module 5: Grief

Registered Nursing Credit Designation
