Median survival for polycythemia vera (PV) patients is 10.9 years. People with PV may have a shorter-than-normal life span, but with careful medical supervision and therapy, PV can usually be managed effectively for a long time. In some cases, however, PV may progress to myelofibrosis, acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome.
